What You'll Need
A stove
A pot with a lid
Canola oil
A serving bowl
Your favorite popcorn topping
How to Make Popcorn
Step 1: Add the Oil
Pour enough canola oil into the pot to cover the bottom with a thin layer.
Step 2: Add the Popcorn Kernels
Add enough kernels to cover the bottom of the pot in a single layer. Avoid piling them too deeply, since the kernels need room to pop.
Step 3: Coat the Kernels
Gently move the pot from side to side to help coat the kernels evenly with oil.
Step 4: Turn Up the Heat
Place the covered pot on the stove over medium-high heat.
Step 5: Listen for the First Pop!
Listen carefully. When the first kernel pops, turn the heat up to high.
Keep the lid on, and use oven mitts or potholders if you need to handle the hot pot.
Step 6: Wait for the Popping to Slow Down
As the popcorn fills the pot, listen for the time between pops to increase. When there's about two or three seconds between pops—or the pot is nearly full—carefully remove it from the burner.
Let the remaining kernels finish popping before removing the lid. Keep the pot covered while you wait, and keep your face and hands away from the opening.
Step 7: Serve and Add Your Favorite Toppings
Carefully remove the hot lid, keeping your face away from escaping steam, and pour the popcorn into a serving bowl.
Now comes the best part: toppings!
What's the Best Popcorn Topping?
That's entirely up to you. Here are a few ideas:
Classic: Salt and melted butter
Simple: Eat it plain
Cheesy: Sprinkle on powdered cheddar cheese
My personal favorite? Cabot powdered premium cheddar cheese.
Mmmmmmm... delicious!
